Michigan Firm Offers Pre-Release P&D Jefferson Dollars
Certified & Graded Days Before The Official Release!

August 8, 2007 -- Michigan dealer, Ken Potter announced that “due to fortunate events” he is able to offer specially certified and graded Philadelphia and Denver issue Thomas Jefferson Presidential dollars well over a full week before their official release date of August 16.  He stated that while one of his suppliers was looking for John Adams dollars to search for double edge lettering errors and smooth edge errors that he (the supplier) was told by one bank that they had five unopened boxes of the coins that he could come and purchase.  After picking them up he found that they had actually sold him two boxes of Adams dollars along with three boxes of the Thomas Jefferson dollars.  The Jefferson dollars were not supposed to be released to the public until the official date of issue August 16 yet they had sold him 3000 of the coins on August 7th!  The official date of issue is marked on a special seal on the boxes that says:  “DO NOT BREAK SEAL UNTIL AUG 16."  Financial institutions handling the coins were also sent a memo from the US Treasury Department indicating that the coins should not be released to the public until that date.

A look at 3000 of the dollars acquired from a Michigan bank on August 7, 2007
 - over a week before the official release date!

Potter acquired these early release Philadelphia Mint coins from his supplier and immediately shipped them out for certification the same day.  The coins began being certified by JT Stanton, president of PCI grading company in his newly introduced “JT Stanton Signature Series” holders on August 8, a full eight days before the coins were intended to be officially released.  The holders will specify that the coins were pre-released on August 7, 2007 and will state the date of grading as August 8, 2007.

Potter said that he then set out to find out if anybody in the hobby had the good fortune of obtaining any of the Denver Mint coins and after some investigation was directed to a dealer who had obtained several thousand of the coins.  Potter then purchased those and had them shipped to Stanton for certification along with the Philadelphia issues.

Potter said that many of the Philadelphia coins would be back to him and ready for sales as early as the next day August 9, while the Denver specimens would follow immediately behind by a day or two.

A closer look at some of the coins.
